The New Curriculum

Why is the curriculum developed at SEM so different?
What does it cover? Its learning Strategy...
and other related information

Introduction

The "New Curriculum for Teaching Byzantine Music" is the fruit of 7 years of continuous efforts in teaching and writing and testing new academic ways with students at SEM. The tests lead sometimes to amendments in the new exercises... and they lead even in other times to a complete change in the utilized new way of teaching.

Titles of the New Curriculum

The curriculum consists of 6 volumes:

  1. An introduction to the Byzantine Music Notation
  2. An introduction to the Byzantine 8 Modes
  3. The Scales and Modes of the Byzantine Music
  4. The Derivative Scales, the Transposition and the Arab Maqams
  5. The Khironomia Signs
  6. The Prosomia
  7. An Introduction to Byzantine Music Composition

Revolutionary Elements of the New Curriculum

As we will demonstrate later on in this page, the new curriculum constitutes a revolutionary way in teaching Byzantine Music due to the following elements:

  1. Its innovative and tested exercises and academic strategies
  2. Its broad scope that covers all aspects of Byzantine Music on all levels from a complete Theoretical presentation of the theories of Byzantine Music, to the oral traditions in interpreting byzantine Music...
  3. Its professional presentation and structure encompassing a large variety of tools that aim at motivating the student to learn and to develop its critical and professional analysis. (Written exercises, general knowledge windows, ...)

All volumes include audio CDs.

Printing and Language Conditions and Prospects

These books have not been printed yet due to their high printing cost. They are been photocopied for students in the schools that follow this curriculum.

This curriculum has been written in Arabic, yet it is being translated currently into English for the service of a wider range of students all over the world.

We expect that we will be able to start posting it on our website gradually soon.
